In Nere Herriko Doinauk, Basque pianist Josu Gallastegui brings the subtle, romantic music of his homeland to audiences everywhere. The selections include traditional Basque folk songs and lullabies, a suite of classic Basque dances, Benito Lertxundi’s evocative ballad, Baldorba, topped off by Gallastegui’s splendid performance of Joaquin Larregla’s unforgettable Jota de Concierto.
“Josu Gallastegui takes us into his home and soul with this collection of heart-warming songs from the Basque” one reviewer wrote. The music evokes “joy, nostalgia, playfulness, reminiscence, and wistfulness. Mr. Gallastegui subtly brings out the unexpectedly delightful directions that a melody takes, unveiling yet another layer of beauty, much like the discovery of a hidden village embedded in the mountains, brought to sight by a winding in the road.”
Born in Bilbao, Josu Gallastegui is an acclaimed accompanist, recording artist, and composer who has performed throughout Europe, Russia, Latin America, and the United States, including in concerts at Lincoln Center, Carnegie Recital Hall, and St. Patrick’s Cathedral. Reviewers have noted the “great precision, sensitivity, and transparent quality” of his performances, and composer Aram Khachaturian, attending one of Josu’s Moscow performances, called him “a very sensitive pianist and extraordinary accompanist.”
Josu is also one of the world’s most accomplished and beloved ballet pianists. In a career spanning decades, he has worked leading dancers and choreographers including Mikhail Baryshnikov, Cynthia Gregory, Cynthia Harvey, Susan Jaffe, Allegra Kent, Gelsey Kirkland, Rudolf Nureyev, Anna Sokolow, and Ross Stretton among many others. Mikhail Baryshnikov has called Gallastegui “a superb musician with a remarkable sensitivity for ballet.”
